Do you have a health insurance plan, or did you miss Open Enrollment last year? If you have a policy, how is it working out for you? Are you satisfied with its coverage, deductibles, and other provisions? Are you aware if there are any changes in store for your plan in 2018?
Even if your 2017 coverage was picture perfect, there could be major changes that could impact you and your family in 2018. Whether you are a Medicare recipient or an individual/family plan holder, you can be certain that changes are happening every year and it is vitally important for you to review your coverage to make sure it is the best and most cost effective plan for you.
If you’re on Medicare, your Annual Enrollment Period begins October 15 and runs through December 7. During this time, you can change from a regular Medicare plan to an Advantage plan, or vice versa. You can also select a different Advantage plan from your current one, or elect supplemental coverage.
For those of you who have not yet reached age 65, or are not covered by an employer’s group health insurance policy, you might elect to proceed through Covered California or shop on the private marketplace. The Open Enrollment Period for both of these markets will begin on November 1 and last through January 31 of 2018. However, if you want to get coverage started by January 1, you need to complete your application by December 15. Other deadlines include:
- Complete your application by January 15 for coverage to begin on February 1
- Complete your application by January 31 for coverage to begin March 1
Unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period during the year, Open Enrollment is the only time that you can change your plan or elect a new one. In order to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, your household must experience at least one significant change, such as marriage or divorce, adding a new child to the family, or your current policy is canceled for some reason. If you think you might qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, give us a call and we’ll help you investigate your options. There are several other situations which entitle you to a Special Enrollment Period.
Otherwise, we look forward to hearing from you this fall! Remember to begin evaluating your current health insurance policy now, so you can make an informed decision about your coverage, deductibles, and premiums.
